Strategic use of carefully selected Texel genetics while maintaining a strong Pahiwi Romney base.

• Breeding from our youngest and newest genetics via the elite ewe hogget flock we are developing the Pahiwi Romtex. Each year we are sourcing the very best of the Hemingford Texel sires, which are single sire mated over the Pahiwi Romney ewe hoggets to produce ½ Texel 1/2 Romney progeny. With a strong maternal focus and very tidy structure Hemingford Texels were a natural choice, we are also partnering with Focus Genetics Waikete Texels to utilise some FE tolerant Texel genes in the Romtex program. These key breeding partners set the Pahiwi Romtex ahead and give clients a chance to utilise some of the countries leading Texel genes alongside our proven Pahiwi base.
• Maintaining our straight up direct approach to structure and constitution rams must measure up, the results and feedback from clients have been very pleasing.
• Locking in the key attributes of the Texel – meat yield, survivability, open clear points and constitution.
• For sheep farmers who may be looking to inject some vigour, finishing ability and constitution the Pahiwi Romtex provides an opportunity to do just this. We have had clients move from composite flocks and purebred flocks successfully and the results have been impressive.
• High lamb survival. Suitable for mating over both ewe hoggets and ewes our observations and data shows lambs are very quick to get up and bond strongly with their mothers.
